Watch The John Lewis Christmas Advert 2022, The Beginner
Always highly anticipated, in 2022 the John Lewis Christmas advert had come later than other retailers. This included the Asda launch which had used the popular Christmas film Elf, setting the bar high, at least in terms of surprise!
The last few years had witnessed a Christmas build-up marred by economic and environmental challenges. The uncertainty stemming from Covid regarding shopping, planning, or spending time with loved ones at Christmas was barely two years in the past. In 2022, similar challenges had presented themselves; the UK was in a recession of uncertain duration, household costs had risen leading to a cost of living crisis, and the impact of climate change was further complicating matters with supply issues and political instability.
In moments when a strong, possibly exceptional, sales period was needed, it was tempting to pivot towards high volume, low-cost items. Draw people inside, guide them online, deliver stellar service, and hope everything else falls into place. But history had shown that during recessions, consumers clung to their emotions and values. They became more nostalgic, sought comfort, and exhibited a heightened desire to assist others.
At a time when business and political leaders had been acting with caution, moments of genuine responsibility shone through in their communications. In 2022, with the John Lewis Christmas Advert, they prioritised broader societal responsibility, taking the helm and demonstrating their capability to assist. They were no newcomers to this approach. Back in 2020, they had aligned the release of their Christmas advert ‘Give a Little Love’ with National Kindness Day.
Aligning with their ‘Building Happier Futures’ initiative they supported two charities in 2022, Action For Children, and Who Cares? Scotland.
Watch The John Lewis Christmas Advert 2021, Unexpected Guest
Steeped in eager anticipation, the John Lewis Christmas advert heralds the onset of the festive shopping season, a signal as familiar to Britons as the first winter frost. In 2021, the campaign broke tradition and commenced earlier than its customary timing, sparking a crescendo of public curiosity. Across the breadth of the UK, enigmatic installations materialized in urban centres, crafting a spectacle reminiscent of a scene plucked from the pages of ‘The War of the Worlds’ or the cinematic frames of ‘Batteries Not Included’. These cryptic structures, suggestive of extra-terrestrial craft, bore a simple yet stirring message: ‘Christmas is landing 04/11/21 #UnexpectedGuest’, setting the stage for a holiday narrative as intriguing as it was unanticipated.
The official release landed at 8am on Thursday 4th November 2021, and premiered on ITV. This is the earliest John Lewis have launched their Christmas campaign, and continues the early start to Christmas shopping seen across many UK retailers including Boots and M&S.
The 2021 chapter of the John Lewis Christmas narrative, christened ‘Unexpected Guest’, featured the vocal talents of Lola Young. Despite the previous year’s original number ‘A Little Love’ by Celeste resonating as a hit, the partnership opted for a return to their roots with a cover for this instalment. Lola Young’s rendition of ‘Together in Electric Dreams’, the synth-pop classic first brought to life by Phil Oakey—best known as the lead vocalist of The Human League—in 1984, was chosen to underscore the advert’s heart-warming tale.
Watch The John Lewis Christmas Advert 2020, Give A Little Love
The John Lewis Christmas advert 2020, Give a Little Love, was sung by Celeste. Usually putting a spin on an existing track, this was the first time since 2007 that John Lewis had commissioned an artist to write a new song for their annual tradition. Following the campaign title, the track is called A Little Love.
Launched on national kindness day, and confirming the retail build up to Christmas, the John Lewis advert is always anticipated, but 2020 was a little different. Late night shopping, celebrations, and time with the family were on pause.
The pandemic was having a temporary impact on tradition, social distancing was in place, shops closed, and there was a significant move online to order gifts, and the build up included uncertainty around a Christmas lockdown. For many it had been a tough year, and this story reflected that, but it doesn’t dwell, this is a story of hope, a journey of kindness, reminding us to look out for others, to help when we can, teaching us what happens… when we Give a Little Love.
